0-Year: Best Age for Developing Infants' Intelligence

After 10 years of clinical study, Chinese medical experts have drawn the conclusion that the best age for developing infants' intelligence is before the baby becomes a year old, which provides scientific basis for infants' education.

According to professor Bao Xiulan, a famous pediatrician from Beijing Union Medical College Hospital, whether or not to educate infants at the age of zero to three years will have a direct influence on their intelligence development.

The latest research in brain science shows that by improving the fostering conditions and advocating education at the early stage, not only normal children's intellectual development can be improved, but also mental deficiencies can be effectively prevented, Beijing Evening News reported recently.

It is because human brains have great potential, especially in the early stage. Once some neurocytes cannot function well, the nearby ones will replace them. However, when this sensitive period is over, the deficiency will be perpetual, researchers explained.

The study by experts proves this point. They divided 119 asphyxiated infants into two groups randomly. One group received early education, but the other group received a normal education. When these children were one and-a-half years old, the intellectual development index of the first group reached 105, but the other was only 90, and 9 percent of the second group had mental deficiencies.

According to statistics, among disabled children between the ages of zero to four, mental deficiencies account for about 70 percent. In China, because of various factors, the number of children with mental deficiencies is over 600,000.

"In fact, they can be saved by early education," said Bao.

Bao said now many countries in the world are paying great attention to brain science and the development of the brain's potential. In China, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Gladly, soon China's first local regulation on preschool children's education will come out in Beijing, which requires shifting the age of early education from 3 years of age to the first year the child is born.

Bao explained that it is very important for children to have physical health, but without intelligence and the ability to adapt themselves to society, they cannot live in society.

In fact, the majority of parents are carrying on early education unconsciously, but they need the direction of science. Such a kind of education must be performed in a planned way according to children's intellectual development, she said.

Bao added that usually doctors think they only have the responsibility of curing the children, but they are the first to come in contact with the children, so inevitably they must take this responsibility of early education.

Bao has made an outline for children's early education, so that doctors can direct parents on how to train their children in all aspects such as sports, language and social communication.

Some local hospitals in Beijing have begun to provide such services.
