5 Tourists From Taiwan Killed in Traffic Accident in Brazil

A bus carrying 40 tourists from Taiwan overturned on a mountain highway Wednesday, killing five passengers, police said.

The accident occurred when the bus was returning from the historical city of Petropolis, about 31 miles north of Rio de Janeiro.

"It appears that the driver was speeding as he was turning a sharp curve," Milton Oliveira Mattos of the Federal Highway Police Department said by phone. "The driver lost control of the bus and it overturned on the highway."

Mattos said that several of the 35 tourists who survived the accident suffered injuries, "but none of them are life threatening."
