Putin Regards Relations With CIS Top Priority for Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that relation with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was top priority in Russia's foreign policy.

Summing up the results of the first day of the informal CIS summit in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, he said such meetings were very important because more than 20 million Russian- speaking people live outside Russia.

"These people's life largely depends on how we build our relations with these countries," he said. Putin also noted the importance of informal discussions among CIS leaders, saying that such an planned meeting may produce better results than an over- bureaucratized one."

The president stressed that the Russian economy "is on the rise to a certain extent," as are the economies of other CIS states. " This requires additional coordination of our efforts in such areas as industrial development, foreign policy, defense and security", he added.

The CIS countries "had, have and will develop close contacts in the economic and financial fields, as well as in the sphere of humanitarian relations," he said.
