CMA Invites International Applications for President

Eleven candidates from home and abroad applied for the hotly contested post of president of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) recently.

This is the first time that the CMA has allowed international candidates to apply for such a senior post through an open selection in a move to reform its personnel system by selecting more qualified and competent people for leading posts.

Among the 11 candidates, there are well-known experts in domestic atmospheric research, visiting scholars currently studying overseas, and there is even one Swedish candidate with Chinese origin.

Most of the candidates were born in the 1960s and the youngest is only 36 years old. All the candidates have expertise in the meteorological field and some have got doctor degrees.

Academician Chao Jiping of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, who attended the open selection sessions, said he was deeply impressed by the enthusiasm of the candidates and the highly professional expertise they have shown.

The selection result will be announced in late August, but CMA Personnel Department Director Zhang Junxia said although there's only one post for president, the CMA hopes that it will be able to place several more excellent candidates in other positions.
