HK Chief Executive: China's Achievement Wins Universal Recognition

The winning of the 2008 Olympic Games by Beijing represents the universal recognition of China's achievement made during the last decades, said Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, on Tuesday.

Speaking at a reception in celebration of Beijing's successful bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, Tung said: "Beijing's success in becoming the hosting city for the 2008 Olympic Games represents not only the confidence of the international community in China's ability to host world class events. It also represents an important milestone in China's development since the opening of its economy in 1978.

"The reforms carried out by the Central Government over the past two decades have brought spectacular improvements to the infrastructure, education, social development, quality of life, and sports facilities and activities of the people on the Mainland. "

"The hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games and the accession of China to the WTO all represent that China is gaining its rightful place in the international community," Tung told some two hundred guests and reporters at the reception.
