Since the mid-1990s, Chinese professionals residing abroad have been coming back in large numbers. Incomplete statistics show that so far overseas talented Chinese have established over 3,000 enterprises in various economic development zones in China. Most of the enterprises are involved in information technology, bio-engineering, medical science, financial services and education. Some have been listed on overseas stock markets. The Chinese government encourages and supports overseas Chinese to develop their skills in China and many preferential policies have been issued to attract more talents to return home. Overseas Chinese and foreigners of Chinese origin are estimated at 30 million all over the world at present, and among them about one million are professionals in the science and technology field.
