Zhang Jian to Swim Tianchi Lake

Zhang Jian, the first Chinese who has successfully swum across the English Channel, is reported going to conquer Tianchi Lake, the deepest volcanic crater-lake in Changbai Mountains in China, to achieve his another goal of challenging the nature.

The Tianchi Lake, 2,189 meters above sea level, with an average water depth of 204 meters, has a water surface of 9.8 square km. Since ancient times, it is well known for its mystery, peril and impressive sights.

According to reports, Zhang Jian will begin this challenge in September, but the actual date will have to depend on the climate in Tianchi and his health condition. During this period, water temperature of the lake will be around 7¡æ.

Zhang Jian will be confronted with many nature tests like low water temperature, high altitude, and the rigor over 3.3km of distance. He will start from below Zixia Peak to the northeast of Tianchi, all will be carried out in the lake area on the Chinese side.

The activity will be co-sponsored by Yanbian Chaoxian Autonomous Region Government of Jilin Province, Baishan municipal government, Jilin Provincial Tourism Administration and Jilin Forestry Bureau.

Tianchi, "Lake of the Heaven", lies in the Changbai Mountains, a volcanic crater-lake, five kilometers from north to south, 3.5 kilometers from east to west, and 13 kilometers in circumference. It is surrounded by jagged rock outcrops and peaks; three rivers run off the lake, with a rumbling 68-meter waterfall - the source of Songhua and Tumen Rivers. Tianchi Lake is the deepest lake in China, and a lake that separates China and Korea. In this area there are Lesser Tianchi Lake, Jing Lake, Changbai Hot Spring and many other known scenic spots.
