20,000 Public Servants Taking up English Training in Beijing

Since Beijing succeeded in the 2008 Olympic Games bid, 20,000 public servants have been enlisted to take up a "Speak English" training course in Beijing.

Sun Zhenyu, deputy director of Beijing Personnel Department, told the journalist that presently Beijing has about 100,000 public servants. Whether or not they can surmount the difficulty in English is a focal problem in fulfilling the target of "Green Olympics, Technological Olympics and Humane Olympics". Therefore the decision on English study among public servants by stages and consequently mass English learning by all citizens throughout the municipality of Beijing.

Under the authoritative department concerned there has been set up a "Speak English Office" for organizing the training course and publishing training material of "Public Servants English". So far, three terms of training course have been held for training qualified teachers under a unified program.

The first target of the training program is: Every trainee is proficient with more than 100 English dialogue sentences; every trainee with an educational background of undergraduate (above) can master more than 300 sentences; select 600 enrollees to be released from production for a three-month intensified training course. All trainees who can prove themselves proficient through exams will get the "Public Servant 'Speak English' Certificate" awarded by Beijing Personnel Department.
