Legend Shifting PC Production to Shanghai
Legend Group, China's top PC vendor, is considering shifting one third of its PC production to Shanghai Pudong Development Zone, Ying Qi, general manager of the Shanghai unit said over the weekend.
The new plant, which is to be set up and be up and running in September, would roll out some 1.5 million PC units per year.
"We have to make a move to meet local demand," Ying said, citing figures that the company's sales volume in East China has jumped from 3.2 billion yuan (US$390 million) in 1999 to 7.3 billion yuan (US$880 million) (Of which, 5.2 billion yuan comes from Legend Holdings Shanghai unit and 2.1 billion from Digital China Shanghai Unit).
Ying said the increasing demand in the region has called for a local plant to avoid delays in transportation.
The move is also to ease the mounting pressure from Legend's two plants in Beijing and Huiyang, Guangdong Province, said Ying.
The company's wireless communication R&D center in western Shanghai and notebook division in Beijing will also be moved into the development zone.
