Shanghai Launches Training Program of WTO ProfessionalsThis industrial powerhouse in east China launched on Tuesday China's first training program of senior professionals with proficiency in World Trade Organization' s affairs. The three-year program aims to train 100 senior professionals for the Shanghai municipal government, state-owned enterprises, professional service institutions and industrial associations, in a bid to provide human resources for the municipality after China' s WTO accession. At Tuesday's launching ceremony, a spokesman from the Shanghai municipal government said that Shanghai, as a commercial center at the forefront of China's reform and opening-up drive, must train professionals who are proficient with WTO protocols, international trade, international laws, WTO working languages and information technology. The program is open for application to public servants and professionals under 45, with a good education background and literacy in English and computer. Training sessions will be held in China and overseas by scholars from elite universities in Shanghai, senior government officials and WTO specialists from overseas. Experts here believe that the training program will help involve the municipality in the multilateral trade system and the economic globalization process. On the other hand, Shanghai's experience will also prove helpful to other cities and provinces in their training of WTO professionals.
