Vice Premier Calls for Promotion of Medical Insurance Reform

Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing on Monday stressed the importance of medical insurance reform and asked related departments to sum up experiences so as to speed up the reform.

Li, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, made the remark at a working meeting on the reform of the basic medical insurance system for urban employees and the entire medicare system.

He said that China has so far established a new medical insurance system for urban employees. By the end of this year, over 90 percent of the cities in China, or as many as 80 million urban employees, will benefit from the new system.

The vice premier stressed that governments at all levels should be aware of the importance and urgency of the reform of the medical insurance system.

Although the reform has achieved significant progress, it needs to be further deepened, he added.
