China's Chief Justice Calls for Court Reform

The top Chinese judicial official said on Sunday that the reform of the people's court has come to a crucial point and the reform work must be further promoted.

Xiao Yang, chief justice of the Supreme People's Court, made this remark at a colloquium attending by high courts heads from across the country.

He said that in the coming five years the reform of the people' s court will focus on such issues as the improvement of the surveillance system, the lawsuit evidence system and the case- hearing procedures.

Xiao also stressed at the colloquium that President Jiang Zemin 's speech on July 1 should be regarded as a strong theoretical weapon for the reform of the country's court system.
