HK-US Customs to visit Textiles FactoriesIn order to combat illegal transshipment of textiles and clothing products, another round of joint factory observation visits by Customs officers both from Hong Kong and the United States will be conducted next month.Officers from the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department and the United States will start the three-week visits to the local textiles and clothing factories on August 20. "This would keep the US up-to-date with our textiles export control arrangements. A better understanding by the US of our efforts will help enhance the two sides' co-operation and effectiveness in combating illegal textiles transshipment," said Andrew Wong Ching-wai, head of Trade Controls, Customs and Excise Department of Hong Kong, on Sunday. This is the ninth round of joint factory visits since 1996. The joint visit teams will go to only those textiles factories who have given prior consent to the visits. "Joint visit team members would not undertake any enforcement activities during the visits. If necessary, any enforcement activities would be undertaken by the Hong Kong Customs independently and separately from the visits," said Wong in a government press release.
