Smuggled Ivory Seized in East China

Customs in Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province and Shanghai in east China, have reported over 20 cases of ivory smuggling seizures this year.

A total of seven pieces of ivory and ivory products were confiscated from posted parcels upon entry by Hangzhou Customs this month.

This year, Shanghai Pudong Airport Customs have reported 20 cases of ivory smuggling seizures, with 1,533 pieces of ivory and ivory products confiscated.

According to international trade conventions and Chinese laws on wildlife protection, African elephants are listed as a rare species. No elephant-related products are allowed to be traded, carried or posted through China Customs without licenses from the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
