Khatami to Start Second Mandate as Iranian President

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is to approve President Mohammad Khatami his second term on schedule next Thursday, the official IRNA news agency reported Saturday.

"The approval (formality) is to be held on August 2 in the presence of top officials," according to Mohammad-Ali Abtahi, head of Khatami's office.

Khatami, who was elected president of the Islamic Republic in 1997 with a 70 percent majority vote, won another landslide victory in June 8 election this year.

Under the related arrangements, Khatami will attend the swearing-in ceremony in the reformist-majority Majlis (parliament) three days after the approval by the country's supreme leader.

Within two weeks after the ceremony, Khatami is to introduce his next cabinet to Majlis for vote of confidence.

As the chief executive of the nation, President Khatami has been busy in making up his new cabinet. Vowing to take the economy as top priority in his new administration, he has invited all political groups of the country to practice moderation and shun violence.
