Indonesian President Emphasizes Development for People's WelfareIndonesian new President Megawati Soekarnoputri officiated several development projects in South Sulawesi province on Saturday, emphasizing that development is meant to improve the people's welfare.Less than a week after her election, Megawati signed a plague, symbolizing the starting of the projects, valued totally at 786 billion rupiah (78 million U.S. dollars). The president said that foreign assistance mostly comes in the form of loans that must be repaid on time. "We carry out development to achieve progress, welfare for the people and for becoming a self-sufficient nation," Megawati was quoted by the Antara News Agency Sunday as saying. Megawati reminded the province to maintain the "spirit of nationhood." In her speech, Megawati asked the governor to pay attention to preserving water sources in the province by keeping the natural resources well preserved, in particular those in the upstream areas of rivers. The development projects officiated included Water Purification Installation Batangkaluku, constructed with funds from a soft-loan from the Japanese government. The other projects are a modern abattoir with a capacity of 100 head of cattle per day, and a dam at Sekka-Sekka, Polmas, and a road and bridge rehabilitation project.
