Legend Gains Share as Asian PC Sales Stall in 2nd Quarter

Legend Holdings Ltd increased its share of the Asian personal computer market in the second quarter, even as overall sales in the region stalled from the first quarter, market researcher International Data Corp said.

Second-quarter sales at Asia's largest PC maker rose 2 percent from the previous three months, taking Legend's share in the region to 12.1 percent, almost double that of nearest rival International Business Machines Corp, according to IDC.

Still, Legend's share price, most recently at HK$4.125, is close to a two-year low of HK$4 as analysts wonder whether the company can increase its approximate 33 percent market share in China, the only market where Legend sells its computers.

"Global weakness is dragging on longer than expected, making everyone more cautious in their spending," said Davina Yeo, an IDC analyst. "2001 will be a difficult year for all, particularly smaller players who do not have the muscle to fight it out."

In Asia, Compaq Computer Corp overtook Samsung Elecronics Co as the region's third-largest PC seller. Samsung's shipments dropped 14.5 percent from a year ago, and Trigem Computer Inc's shipments fell 18.2 percent, IDC said.

Sales in Asia, excluding Japan, reached 5.19 million units in the second quarter, increasing 8 percent from a year ago, the market research company said.

Demand in markets such as Australia, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea declined from a year ago, while spending in countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines stalled because of political and social problems, IDC said.
