Former Indonesian President Arrives in US for Medical Treatment

Wahid Arrives in US for Medical Treatment
Former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid arrived here on Friday for medical treatment, one day after he left the presidential palace in Jakarta.

The 61-year-old Wahid and his entourage first flew to Washington Dulles International Airport by a British Airways jet, then were driven to Baltimore, where the former president was admitted to Johns Hopkins University Hospital.

Wahid, who was accompanied by his wife and Indonesian embassy officials, reportedly planned to stay at hospital for five days mainly for the treatment of high blood pressure problems.

Wahid was elected as Indonesian president less than two years ago and was removed by the country's top assembly on Monday. Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri has succeeded him as the new president.

Wahid has suffered two strokes and is nearly blind.
