Annan Condemns Attack on Sri Lanka Airport

United Nations Secretary- General Kofi Annan condemned the recent attack by the rebel Tamil Tigers against Sri Lanka's international airport, urging all sides to make efforts for peace.

The U.N. chief "is dismayed" at the attack in the country's capital, Colombo, said a statement issued by his spokesman on Friday, July 27.

Annan called on "all sectors of Sri Lankan society to make every effort to initiate and sustain a viable peace process," the statement said, reiterating Annan's support for the efforts to facilitate a negotiated political solution to the destructive conflict in the south Asian country.

During the attack on Tuesday by the rebels, three Airbus planes worth some US$350m were destroyed. And a total of 14 Tamil rebels and seven government military personnel were killed in the fighting, officials said.
