89 Bodies Discovered After Mine Explosion

The death toll from the coal mine explosion early Sunday in Xuzhou, in east China's Jiangsu province, had risen to 89 by Friday night.

The rescue work is continuing, but experts say it unlikely that they will find any survivors still trapped in the mine.

The explosion trapped 105 miners underground, with only two of them escaping the disaster.

Family members of the dead have begun to identify and cremate the bodies, and receive life pensions from the government.

More than 100 rescuers have formed 20 teams to work at the scene around the clock, but they are having difficulty digging through the mine.

An investigation team consisting of members of several state departments has arrived at the scene. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, they said.

Zhuang Jincai, the owner of the mine, has been arrested by the local procuratorate.
