The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the European Union (EU) have formally established diplomatic ties, said a joint statement issued Thursday in Pyangyong by both sides.
The Korean Central News Agency quoted the statement as saying that DPRK Ambassador to Vietnam Ho Jong and EU commission Director Percy Westerlund met informally in Hanoi Wednesday to discuss the follow-up to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and EU.
The statement said diplomatic ties were established on May 14, following an exchange of letters between DPRK Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun and EU external relations commissioner Christopher Patten.
It was agreed that practical details of diplomatic representation would be negotiated this autumn.
