People's Daily Calls for Uprooting Corruption

People's Daily will publish a commentary Friday calling for pulling up corruption by its roots.

The article says that the infamous Xiamen smuggling case happened because some Party officials succumbed to temptations. The crimes could not have been committed if customs had been more tightly guarded, it says.

It points out that the customs officials, unable to resist the lure of money and sex, had vested interests in protecting the culprits.

Therefore, the best way to wipe out corruption is to create a system that can effectively restrict people's power, while continuing the crackdown at the same time, the article urges.

It notes that the anti-corruption campaign should be combined with the on-going rectification of the market, and it is especially important to establish a management and supervision system that can meet the requirements of the market economy.

The focus should be put on restricting power, supervising capital flow, rectifying people's behavior and strengthening management, it adds.

It calls on the public and the media to further supervise officials, especially leading officials, so that they do not abuse their power.

The article finally urges the Party members to resist decadent ideas such as greed and self-indulgence, and build an "ideological Great Wall" that can keep corrupt elements out of the Party.
