Indonesian Supreme Court Judge Shot Dead in JakartaThree persons were questioned by Jakarta police in relation to the death of Supreme Court judge Muhammad Syafiuddin Kartasasmita who was shot dead in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Thursday morning, the Jakarta Post.com online news service reported.Syafiuddin was the Supreme Court's junior head of criminal cases and had been handling the case of former president Soeharto' s fugitive son Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra. Syafiuddin was driving his Honda car at around 08:30 a.m. local time when two gunmen riding on a motorcycle drove the motorcycle into the car and started to open fire. The victim was reportedly shot in the hand, lost control of his vehicle and hit a cigarette kiosk on the side of the street, injuring an eyewitness. When the car eventually stopped, the attackers fatally shot the victim in the chest and jaw. Syafiuddin died almost instantly while his attackers fled the scene. Central Jakarta Police are currently questioning three other witnesses to the fatal shooting. The murder has aroused a public outcry and concerns over the possibility of intimidation against law enforcers battling corruption in the country. "We are deeply saddened and concerned over this, but we must not stop the fight for justice," Sudjono, head of the Indonesian Advocates Association, was quoted by the Antara News Agency as saying. |
