Chinese Premier Meets German Justice Minister

Premier Zhu Rongji met with German Justice Minister Mrs. Herta Daeubler Gmelin Thursday morning at the Great Hall of the People.

Zhu said that the Chinese government pays special attention to the relations with Germany, and regards Germany as a reliable partner. Over the past few years, the two countries have made new progress in all fields of cooperation.

He said that leaders of the two countries have maintained close contact, bilateral economic and trade cooperation has been constantly expanding, and the two sides have also launched exchanges and cooperation in legal, environment and other new fields.

Zhu added that the Chinese government values Sino-German legal exchanges and cooperation, and is willing to develop exchanges with the German side and learn something from German side in line with the principle of equality and mutual respect.

Daeubler Gmelin, who is also coordinator for the German side for Sino-German legal exchanges and cooperation, said that she fully agrees with Premier Zhu's comments on the bilateral relations between the two countries, adding that the German side is happy to see the fast development of bilateral relations.

She said that, through joint efforts by the two sides, the cooperation between the two sides in legal exchanges will surely make new progress.

She also recalled Premier Zhu's successful visit to Germany last year, and she congratulated Beijing on its successful bid for the Olympic Games.
