Sri Lankan International Airport Reopens

Sri Lanka's only international airport reopened on Wednesday after it was closed down shortly after it was attacked by separatist Tamil Tiger rebels re-dawn on Tuesday, officials said.

The Bandaranaike International Airport is now operational for international traffic, an airport official said.

All airlines have been informed of the development and Sri Lankan Airlines has announced a schedule of flights for arrival and departure in the day.

However, the flight timings were subject to change, a spokesperson for Sri Lankan Airlines said.

The Bandaranaike International Airport, some 30 kilometers northeast of capital Colombo, and an adjoining air force base were attacked by Tamil Tiger rebels in a pre-dawn raid Tuesday, destroying or damaging 14 aircraft including six passenger planes. The loss is estimated as high as 350 million U.S. dollars.
