Carrefour to Set Up Procurement and Distribution Center in China

French retailer Carrefour unveiled its plans to set up a procurement and distribution center in Shenzhen, in south China's Guangdong Province.

At a meeting with vice-mayor Wang Suiming Wednesday, Carrefour' s senior executives said that the company has the plan to set up a procurement office here in August, which would distribute Chinese commodities through its global retail network.

Chen Yaodong, vice-president of Carrefour China, said that the company's procurement in China this year is expected to reach 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. Annual purchases will increase to 3 billion U.S. dollars worth by 2003.

Carrefour has 23 supermarkets in 14 Chinese cities. The upcoming procurement center will be its first in China, providing Chinese producers with orders, requirements and quotations from companies worldwide as well as up-to-date international market information, Chen said.

It will be developed into one of Carrefour's major distribution center in the world, which will feed the company's chain supermarkets in 29 countries and regions.

The world's second largest supermarket chain-store company reported a sales volume worldwide of 6 billion euros last year. Its procurement in China has been mostly based in Shenzhen, China' s first special economic zone.
