Trade Liaison Mechanism Between Chinese Mainland, Macao Operational

The first meeting of the liaison committee for commerce and trade between the Chinese mainland and Macao opened here Thursday in Zhuhai, the nearest mainland city to Macao.

The meeting is being attended by An Min, deputy minister of foreign trade and economic cooperation, who leads a delegation from the Chinese mainland, and Macao's Secretary for Economy and Finance Francis Tam Pak Yuen, who heads a mission from Macao.

They will discuss the work schedule of the liaison committee and exchange views on problems cropping up in economic and trade exchanges between Macao and the Chinese mainland.

The liaison committee will perform its duty by strictly abiding by the principle of "one country, two systems," and the Macao Basic Law, as well as relevant economic and trade degrees of the Chinese mainland and Macao.

Experts believe the liaison committee will serve as a good channel for official exchanges between the mainland and Macao and will play an active role in promoting economic and trade cooperation between the two places.

Customs statistics show that in the first six months of the year, the volume of trade between the Chinese mainland and Macao was 388 million U.S. dollars. Of the total, the shipment from the mainland to Macao accounted for 329 million U.S. dollars.

During the same period, 192 Macao-funded ventures were approved in the Chinese mainland, involving 270 million U.S. dollars of contractual investment from Macao.
