Casio Agrees to Replace Problem Calculators

With regard to the case of Chinese consumers' complaints about the calculating mistakes of Casio calculators, Japan Casio Computer Co., Ltd. recently agreed to apologize to Chinese consumers and then replace the problem calculators. But prior to this agreement, Casio only agreed to make apology to the public.

According to Zhejiang Consumers' Association, the apology letter and detailed program of Casio Computer Co., Ltd. will be publicized in the countrywide and Zhejiang Provincial media. The Company will replace the calculators with problems for Chinese consumers between September 20 this year and late March next year. The third round of the negotiation between Zhejiang Consumers' Association and Casio Computer Co., Ltd. on the complaints by Chinese consumers was just wound up recently in Hangzhou. The previous two rounds of negotiation were conducted on May 10 and 18 respectively.

In April, Lin Shoufa, Chen Hua, teachers of Zhejiang Taizhou Hygiene School, lodged their complaints to Zhejiang Consumers' Association and local industrial and commercial supervision department, saying that in spite of their reporting to Casio Computer Co. in 1996 that calculating mistakes exist in their FX-3600PV and FX-3900PV products made in 1989, Casio has never stopped its lavish selling of these two types of calculators in Chinese market.

Person in charge of Zhejiang Consumers' Association released that the third round of negotiation mainly focus on: how to deal with the problem calculators that have been purchased by Chinese consumers; how to compensate Chen Hua and Lin Shoufa. After negotiations, Casio finalized the contents of its apologetic letter to Zhejiang Consumers' Association and Chinese consumers. The two sides also reached an agreement that any consumers who bought the problem calculators can get a new calculator in return free of charge by providing the original products and the related certificates. Casio will pay for the postal charge. The Company appointed four units to handle the details for replacing the products.

The two sides failed to reach any agreement on Chen Hua and Lin Shoufa's compensation fee because of a big divergence. They promised to settle the issue through negotiations later.
