Overseas Young People of Chinese Origin Urged to Contribute to China's Revitalization

Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing called on overseas young people of Chinese origin to make contributions to China's friendly relations with all countries in the world, and to the all-round revitalization of the Chinese nation and world peace and development.

Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, made the remarks Wednesday at the opening ceremony of a summer camp for overseas Chinese young people.

Li recalled the Chinese history of 5,000 years and the Chinese nation's brilliant contributions to society, as well as China's setback in modern history.

He noted that nowadays China is enjoying economic development, social progress, political stability, national unity, increasing international influence, and higher living standards.

Beijing's success in its bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games is one of the manifestations of China's growing national strength, Li added.

He pointed out that the 21st century is a time for China to become a revitalized nation, listing China's three major tasks as accelerating its modernization, realizing the country's reunification, and safeguarding world peace and promoting a common development.

The Chinese government has always held that all countries and people should value friendship and seek peace and common development, Li stated. The vice-premier also defined those young people as "friendship envoys" in helping enhance the friendship between China and all other countries.

China will join all peace-loving countries and people across the world in making a positive and unremitting effort for the promotion of world peace and development, and for the establishment of a just and rational new international political and economic order, Li stressed.

He went on to say that China's development and prosperity require the concern and support of overseas Chinese who have paid much attention to China's reform, opening-up and economic construction, and the revitalization of the Chinese nation demands endeavors by all Chinese in the world.

The camp, with the theme "Seeking Origins Travel in 2001", has attracted over 3,000 overseas young people of Chinese origin from over 40 countries and regions.

The summer camp is sponsored by the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council and the China Overseas Exchanges Association.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Guo Dongpo, director of the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council.
