Forum on Internet and Racism Opens in Beijing

A forum on the "Internet and the Spread of Racist Remarks" was held Wednesday in Beijing.

In his letter to the forum, Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said that the Chinese Government will pay great attention to the Third Session of the United Nations' World Anti-Racism Conference (WARC) to be held in South Africa.

Tang also noted that China will make great efforts to insure the forthcoming convention is a success.

Over 20 Chinese government officials, experts and scholars from related ministries, commissions, universities, and well-known websites attended today's forum which was sponsored by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The attendees of the forum had an extensive and profound discussion on issues like "the current situation of the spread of racist remarks on the Internet," "legal, moral and technical resorts," and "the civil education on Internet usage and anti- racism."

The attendees reached a consensus that the spread of racist remarks on the internet should be of great concern to the international community.

They all agreed that countries throughout the world should enforce civil education to raise people's anti-racism awareness. and improve laws and carry out international cooperation to effectively check the spread of racism on the Internet.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the forum is the first of its kind ever held in China. A thesis of the forum will be submitted to the WARC.
