Chinese Representative Urges to Combat Racism in Geneva

The international community should remain vigilant when faced with new problems of racism and stark challenges in combating racism, a senior Chinese diplomat said Tuesday in Geneva.

Qiao Zonghuai, Head of Chinese delegation, said at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Substantive Session of 2001 that xenophobia, intolerance, discrimination against migrant workers and new-Fascism rampant in some Western countries are typical manifestations of these new forms of racism.

The prolonged plundering and exploitation by colonialism have caused profound and lasting harms to the economic development in victimized nations, said Qiao.

He added that in today's world of globalization, many developing countries are still faced with slow growth and even the danger of marginalization.

He urged the World Conference Against Racism, which will be held on August 31 to September 7 in Durban, South Africa, to honestly echo this call and produce real results in solving these problems.
