China Hosts 27th AIBD Governing Council Meeting
The 27th Governing Council Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) opened Tuesday.
It is for the first time the AIBD Governing Council Meeting is hosted by China. Barbara Edmonds, Chairwoman of the AIBD Governing Council, delivered an address at the opening ceremony.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan of the United Nations and Matsuura Koichiro, Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) sent congratulatory messages to the meeting.
Xu Guangchun, director of China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, said in a speech at the meeting that the Chinese government has always attached great importance to the development of the broadcasting sector, and radio and television have become major channels for spreading information, education and entertainment.
Talking about the role of AIBD, Xu said that as the sole intergovernmental broadcasting organization in the Asia-Pacific region, the AIBD plays and will continue to play an important and positive role in promoting mutual understanding, cooperation, training, and enhancing overall levels of development among member countries.
"We should, through AIBD and its various activities, attempt to strengthen regional co-operation, to preserve the cultural uniqueness of all member countries, and to raise the quality of the broadcasting industries by putting our varied and vibrant cultures on display for the rest of the world," said Xu.
The Kuala Lumpur-based AIBD now has 25 member countries, including China. The institute aims to assist member countries in development of the broadcasting industry and help training personnel in the field.
