Vice Premier Calls on People to Sing for Cultural Progress

Xinhua released an article Monday written by Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing, which calls on the whole nation to kick off a "mass singing campaign" to enhance building of an advanced culture.

The article says that Chinese people have always loved singing, and they have created numerous songs eulogizing the revolutionary cause as well as the modernization drive. These songs have inspired the nation to overcome difficulties by rallying around the Central Committee of the CPC.

The article notes that during the celebrations for the 80th founding anniversary of the CPC, people throughout the country participated in a singing-for-the-Party movement, characterized by various artistic styles.

People have sung in classrooms, in military bases, on farmland, and in gardens. They have sung solo, in choruses, madrigals and other forms, and with special enthusiasm, according to the article.

The vice premier went on to say in the article that singing is an important part of the socialist culture, and it will serve to unite, educate, mobilize and organize the people, cultivating patriotism among them.

In fact, singing makes the people's life more colorful and is conducive to their health both mentally and physically, the article says.

It adds that the music movement meets the development requirements of an advanced culture, and it echoes president Jiang Zemin's instructions on following the Party's lines.

It calls on Party organizations, government departments, artistic troupes, research institutes, factories, schools and villages to energetically join in the campaign.
