ASEAN: Sino-US Relations Important to Regional Stability

Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) stressed Tuesday that the relationship among major powers, particularly the US and China, is important to regional stability.

The foreign ministers reiterated the important role played by the major powers and called on them to make greater contribution to strengthening peace, security, cooperation and development in the region and throughout the world.

They held wide-ranging discussions on regional and international issues at the two-day annual session of ASEAN foreign ministers.

Although the overall security environment remained relatively stable, ASEAN is ready to meet challenges facing the regional group, particularly the impact of globalization and the region's political and economic situation that could undermine ASEAN's development and progress, the foreign ministers said in a joint communique issued at the end of the 34th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.

They reaffirmed their commitment to the One China policy and expressed hope for further positive developments in the cross- straits relations.
