Festival to Highlight Love Songs in SW China

Visitors will soon have a chance to enjoy some interesting customs of the Tibetan people at a Love Song Festival, which will be held in mid-August in Kangding County in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Kangding is famous for the love song "Kangding Ballad" known to both young and old Chinese. The ballad has been widely spread across the country as well as many parts of the world since five young Tibetan students performed it at a world youth party in Vienna nearly 50 years ago.

The ballad was so popular that Placido Domingo, one of the world's three most famous tenors, also sang the song in Shanghai and Beijing this year.

It is a folk custom in Kangding that young people choose their lovers through singing love songs, which can fully express their passion and ideas.

Apart from the love song performances, singing contest and various tourist activities, visitors can also take part in selecting the top ten love songs of the 20th century in west China, according to the organizers of the festival.

The festival is jointly sponsored by local government of Ganzi, the Sichuan Musicians' Association and some other governmental institutions.
