Multinationals Support China's Crackdown on Counterfeiting

Foreign-funded companies in China pledged Tuesday that they will continue to cooperate with the Chinese government in waging the ongoing campaign against the production and export of counterfeit and shoddy goods.

According to a news release from the Quality Bands Protection Committee (QBPC) under the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CAEFI), the group applauded Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's recent remarks on the continuing work of regulating and standardizing the market.

Zhu insisted that special attention be given to the fight against the production and export of counterfeit goods.

Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing also recently stressed the importance of continued efforts to combat counterfeiting, and urged law enforcement departments to cut off the roots of counterfeit manufacturers.

In their efforts to help information sharing and improve practices in the fight against counterfeiting, the QBPC has held a series of seminars in different places around China over the past few months. The seminars focused on such topics as intellectual property protection, anti-counterfeiting enforcement, and development and protection of intellectual property rights in west China.

The QBPC was launched in March 2000. Now it has 71 members, including such international companies as Coca-Cola, Dow Corning, Henkel, Daimler Chrysler and Toshiba.

"As China approaches WTO membership, we look forward to expanding cooperation with Chinese enforcement agencies and people from all sectors in the battle against counterfeiting," said Joseph Johnson, chairman of the QBPC and president of Bestfoods China.
