Kremlin Confirms Death of Notorious Rebel Leader

Russian presidential information office on Monday confirmed the death of a well-known Chechen rebel leader Magomed Tsagaroyev.

"According to available information, Tsagaroyev was killed in Grozny on Sunday night in a shoot-out with the Chechen police," the office quoted military sources in Chechnya as saying.

Earlier reports said Tsagaroyev and several other rebels broke into a house where two policemen lived and shot them to death.

Tsagaroyev was then killed in a subsequent clash with police, and one of his accomplices were detained.

Lieutenant General Vladimir Moltenskoi, commander of the Russian federal forces in Chechnya, other military heads, as well as senior officials from the prosecutor's office arrived at the clash site.

"Relatives and people who knew Tsagaroyev well were called in to identify the body," the office added.

Tsagaroyev, 25, is one of the nation's most notorious rebel leaders. He controlled almost 90 percent of the small rebel groups operating in Grozny and the foothills, and organized numerous terrorist and subversive acts.
