Beijing to Speed up Relocation of Industrial Enterprises

More industrial enterprises will be moved out of the urban areas of Beijing by 2005 to build a cleaner environment for the 2008 Olympic Games, a senior official said Monday.

Liu Haiyan, Vice-Mayor of Beijing, said the city government will readjust the original 10th Five-Year (2001-2005) Plan for the layout of urban industrial enterprises.

Relocation of all the urban industrial enterprises is expected to be completed before the 2008 Olympic Games are held in the Chinese capital.

Industrial pollution has long been in the international spotlight. Liu urged all the enterprises to carry out technological renovations during the relocation process to aid their future development.

The former plan for Beijing's industrial layout adjustment, which was announced at the end of 1999, required 134 enterprises covering a total of 6.13 million square meters of land to be relocated from the urban area within 3-5 years.
