Indonesian Assembly Votes Against President's Decree

Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Monday morning voted against President Abdurrahman Wahid's decree freezing parliament and the Golkar Party.

The votes were cast by 601 members present at the meeting. Of the total votes, 599 rejected the decree and two abstained.

Earlier, The Supreme Court sent letter to the House of Representatives (DPR) saying the president had no right to freeze parliament and the Golkar Party.

The letter, signed by Supreme Court Chairman Bagir Manan, said the president acts of freezing the DPR and the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) were wrong.

The letter was read out to the special session of the MPR on Monday morning.
