Putin, Bush Agree on Broad Format for Strategic Arms Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Sunday that he and US President George W. Bush have agreed on a broad format for strategic arms negotiations between the two countries.

Putin made the remarks at a joint press conference with President Bush after their meeting held following the conclusion of the three-day G8 Summit in Genoa

The Russian president said that the two sides reached an agreement on in-depth discussions of both offensive and defense weapons and the future of their strategic relationship between the two nuclear powers.

"Two of these issues have to be discussed as a set," Putin said.

The Bush administration has been working hard to discard the 1972 ABM treaty signed by Russia and the United States, which stands in the way of deploying the national missile defense system, while Russia has been resisting the U.S. attempt.
