Hun Sen Calls for Accelerating Building of Cambodia's Customs
Cambodia should speed up the building of its customs' mechanism and ranks of customhouse in order to adapt to the trend of economic globalization, Prime Minister Hun Sen said Monday.
He made the remark at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Cambodia's Customs.
The premier highly spoke of the brilliant decision of King Norodom Sihanouk in establishing the Cambodia's own Customs 50 years ago instead of remaining in then Indo-China Customs, noting that the Cambodian people will record the king's contributions in the history of Cambodia.
Being officially accepted as member country of the World Customs Organization (WCO) on April 3, 2001, Cambodia has made a step forward in the trend of economic globalization. Meanwhile, it demands that the Cambodia's Customs speed up the construction of its mechanism and ranks to meet the needs of the new situation, Hun Sen stressed.
He proposed that relevant ministries, such as Ministry of Finance and Council of Ministers, draft a law of customs for approval by the cabinet, then hand over to the legislature to be adopted, which should accord with the international law of customs and related rules.
He stated that the customs should improve the quality of work and beneficial results, focusing on realization of information technicalization and improvement of monitoring system to conform to the demands of the integration of regional economy and that of economy around the world.
Hun also commended the customs' personnel for their achievements in combating smuggling, tax dodging and evasion. He noted that when necessary, military police can work together with customs to crack down on the illegal activities in tax dodging and evasion.
The Cambodia's Customs was established on June 29, 1951. Currently, there are 1,151 personnel in 10 departments at central level and 13 at provincial levels.
