Cambodian Premier on Khmer Rouge Trial

Saying he is "not the son who has to listen to the U.N.," Prime Minister Hun Sen warned Sunday that the Khmer Rouge tribunal will proceed with or without the U.N. 's involvement, the Cambodia Daily reported Monday.

"The government has to implement the Cambodian law," Hun Sen said, "I am only accountable to the National Assembly and the King of Cambodia. It is up to (U.N. Secretary-General) Kofi Annan and ( U.N. legal expert) Hans Corell to decide whether or not to participate. It will not give me a headache."

Additionally, Foreign Minister Hor Namhong on Sunday told reporters in Hanoi, where he is attending an ASEAN meeting, that the U.N. should not impose too many conditions on the tribunal. "I think (the tribunal) will be moving quickly, provided the United Nations will not prevent that by imposing more and more conditions. "
