Rally in Tibet Marks Anniversary of Peaceful LiberationMore than 10,000 local residents and People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers gathered for a rally in Bayizhen town, the seat of Linzhi Prefecture, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet and the re-establishment of the prefecture 15 years ago.It is estimated that nearly one third of the emerging town's 30, 000 residents turned out for the rally at the local stadium, which started at 10:00 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony. Jin Xisheng, chief of the prefecture committee of the Communist Party of China, addressed the audience, in which he praised the Party for its wisdom in the peaceful liberation that has freed Tibet from the invasion and suppression of imperialists. He also hailed the prefecture's achievements in modernization, saying that the prefecture had become self-sufficient in grain and meat by the end of 2000, and that its economy has been growing at an annual rate of 15 percent for several years. The prefecture is enjoying a sound economic development and a stable social order. Its ethnic groups are in concord. The border is safe and peaceful and its people are enjoying their work and lives, the official said. A procession was also held at the rally, which later moved to a local park.
