Chang'an Chooses Not to "Live Under Others' Roof"

Chang'an Automobile Group Corp., "King of China's Mini-vehicle" Sunday declared that it would like to go into cooperation with large international enterprises other than "live under others' roof".

In the face of the severe challenges brought with China's WTO entry, nearly all major Chinese automobile manufacturers have set up joint shareholding enterprises or have cooperative items projected with foreign auto giants. They regard the cooperative items as a magic weapon to survive and develop after China enters the WTO. However, worries widely exist in the circle that Chinese automobile manufacturers may lose themselves in the cooperative or joint shareholding tide and become a private in the large "chessboard" controlled by the international auto giants.

Yin Jiaxu, President of Chang'an Automobile Group Corp., pointed out at the ceremony of Chang'an presenting "Star of Chang'an" cars to Chinese troops on Sunday that as a large state-owned enterprise transformed from developing products for military industrial use to civilian use, Chang'an will probably diversify its property rights. It chooses to cooperate with foreign enterprises and will not join any group or accept any merger. Yin believed that Chang'an will maintain its relatively independent situation in ten years at least.

In fact, Chang'an has its success in changing from a military industrial enterprise to become one as China's fourth largest automobile manufacturer attributed mainly to its technological cooperation with Japan's Suzuki in developing mini-vehicles. Recently it joined capital with Ford Motor, the US and used nearly US$100 million in setting up the "Chang'an Ford Motor Co.". It also established strategic partnership with Oracle, world largest e-commerce suppliers, in building China's largest e-commerce platform for small auto business.

Yin Jiaxu revealed that Chang'an Ford will make economical limousines which are designed especially for Chinese families. It plans to produce 50,000 annually for the first phase. The first group of the autos is planned to get off the production line in February next year.

It is reported that in the coming five years, Chang'an will form an annual production capability of 450,000 vehicles, of which, one third are limousines, with an expected annual production value and sales account close to 20 billion yuan in five years.
