Most legislators of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly, the country's highest law-making body, Monday asked the special session to dismiss incumbent President Abdurrahman Wahid from his post and elect Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri to succeed him.
Presenting their view on Wahid's decree ordering a freeze on parliament, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, the Golkar Party, the United Development Party, the Indonesian Nationhood faction, the Joint United Ummat Sovereignty faction and the Interest faction said the decree violated the Constitution.
Except the National Awakening Party (PKB), which was founded by Wahid, and the Democracy and Love for the Nation Party, all nine factions attended the special session.
