East China Province Helps Tibet Build Ecological ParkWang Zhaoguo, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and head of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), together with Ji Yunshi, governor of Jiangsu Province, and Party and government leaders of the Tibet Autonomous Region, were present at the event. The ceremony was presided over by Losang Jamcan, mayor of Lhasa, the regional capital. More than 500 people from all walks of life in Tibet also attended. The project, with a designed area of 15,000 square meters, will be built at a cost of 70 million yuan (8.43 million U.S. dollars), funded by Jiangsu. Work will begin in September on the park, which is expected to commence operation in August 2003. The park will be used for scientific research, tourism and as a conference venue. Jiangsu, one of the country's richest provinces, has provided a total of 325 million yuan (39 million U.S. dollars) in aid gratis to Lhasa for building hospitals, urban roads, kindergartens and other urban projects over the past seven years. Governor Ji Yunshi said that his province will render further assistance of nearly 200 million yuan (24.09 million yuan) gratis on more projects of Tibet this year and next year.
