Indonesian President Declares State of Emergency

Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, in his capacity as head of state and as supreme commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces, issued a decree declaring a state of emergency at 01:10 a.m. local time (18:10 GMT) on Monday.

According to the decree, the president decided to frozen the People's Consultative Assembly and the House of Representatives, to hold general election within one year and to froze the Golkar Party.

The president asked the Military and the National Police to abide by his order.

According to the Antara News Agency, the Military still opposed Wahid's declaration of a state of emergency.

The Army's Vice Chief of Staff Let. Gen. Kiki Syahnakri said Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Social Affairs Agum Gumelar still held a meeting with the Military chief Widodo A.S.
