Iraq Fires Missile Into Kuwaiti Airspace: Pentagon
The Pentagon claimed on Friday that
Iraq
had fired a missile into
Kuwait
i airspace when it attempted to attack a U.S. military aircraft which was on a patrol flight in a "no-fly" zone over southern Iraq.
A Pentagon official said the incident took place on Thursday and there had been no reports of injuries or missing planes.
The
United States
and Britain set up two no-fly zones in Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War allegedly to protect the ethnic Kurds in the north and Shi'ite Muslims in the south from the Iraqi government's attacks. The Iraqi government has never recognized the legitimacy of the zones.
