Vice-President Visits Xigaze in Tibet

Vice-President Visits Xigaze in Tibet
Vice President Hu Jintao Saturday visited officials and residents of all ethnic groups in Xigaze, a major city in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Along with Hu, who is a member of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, are some members of the central delegation attending celebration activities for the 50th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet.

Local people met the delegation at the city's airport and staged ethnic dances and songs to express a warm welcome to the delegation.

Hu visited local Party and government officials, army officers and soldiers, elderly cadres and veterans.

Hu sent his regards to local officials and people of all ethnic groups on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, the State Council and the Central Military Commission, and presented them a silk banner with an embroidered inscription of Chinese President Jiang Zemin, greeting the 50th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet.

He also visited farms and water-conservancy project sites. While visiting local farmers, the official was deeply concerned about farmers' lives and production activities.

Hu encouraged the farmers to speed up economic development by making use of agricultural technology, calling on local Party and government officials to show great concern to farmers and help them get rich as quickly as possible.

Moreover, the official presented farmers with portraits of Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, Chinese leaders of three generations, and TV sets.

During his visit to Zhaxi Lhunbo, the ninth largest Tibetan Buddhism temple in Tibet, Hu dedicated a piece of "hada" (silk scarf traditionally regarded as a token of respect) to the stupa of the holy body of the Tenth Panchen Lama.

Hu praised the contributions of the temple's lamas for the country's unification and unity of all ethnic groups. He encouraged them to pass on the tradition of the Tenth Panchen Lama 's patriotism and continue to make new contributions to Tibet's development.

Learning that the 11th Panchen Lama is growing up healthily, Hu believed that the lama will become a good patriotic living Buddha.

After listening to work reports made by local Party and government officials, Hu spoke highly of the city's great development after Tibet's peaceful liberation, especially after the reform and opening up in the late 1970s.

Tibet is having abundant development opportunities, he pointed out, calling for local officials to make good use of the opportunities and make efforts to promote the development of the city's economic and social sectors.

Economic development and improving people's living standard are the essential base of unity and stability, the official noted.

It is a must to further develop local farming and tourism resources in order to create a boom in the economy, he said, adding that the city should also make the most of support from inland areas and open wider to domestic and overseas areas.

Strengthening social stability and unity of different ethnic groups lies in the basic interests of the people from all ethnic groups in Tibet. Hu called for more efforts to implement education on Marxism and patriotism among officials and people.

At the same time, education and popularization drives on patriotism, socialism, collectivism as well as the Party's religious policies and related laws should be provided for local people, especially youngsters.

The education is helpful to strengthening the region's stability and smashing separatists' activities, he emphasized.

Hu called on local officials to rely on the people of all ethnic groups and pay attention to the people's difficulties and work to help solve their problems.
