Vice Premier Inspects Flood-Hit GuangxiWen, also head of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, extended the regards of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council to people and soldiers who have been fighting the flood for the past weeks. Two typhoons brought rainstorms to Guangxi early July, which led to the most severe flooding the autonomous region has ever experienced since 1949. Some 11.6 million people and 670,000 hectares of crops were affected. Wen visited several flood-hit counties and local households. He told local officials and people that President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji have been very concerned about the disaster relief work in Guangxi. An emergency handling team was already sent by the State Council to Guangxi to help fight the flood. He asked governments at all level to help resettle the flood victims and pay high attention to controlling diseases after the flood. The governments should also offer seeds, fertilizer and loans that farmers need to start production in Autumn. Wen told local governments to draw lessons from the disaster and make efforts to upgrade the anti-flood capacity. |
